Moving can be an exhausting process but I have the solution you need. As a fashion stylist, I have to pack and unpack my wardrobe several times a week for photoshoots. I find these 5 hacks are quite useful, especially when I’m the only person who will be moving the pieces.
Here are my 5 hacks to move your closet into your new home:
Tip 1 Closet Clear Out– This is the perfect opportunity to clear out any unwanted or damaged pieces that can’t be upcycled or repurposed. If you haven’t worn something in your closet in the last 7 months, it should go into one of these piles: donate, sell or a trash pile. Donations can go to your local shelter, church or goodwill. The sell pile can be sold on websites like Poshmark, Depop, or ThredUp. This will definitely lighten the load on moving day.
Tip 2 Laundry– Wash your dirty laundry and linens before you move at least 3-5 days. This is the easiest hack, yet most dreadful part of packing up your wardrobe. However when it’s time to unpack all the clothes will be nice and fresh. Don’t forget to leave out just enough clothes for the week.
Tip 3 Clothes on the Hanger – I like to use wardrobe boxes to move everything that is hanging in the closet but when I don’t have the exact number of boxes I will resort to using a trash bag. It’s my favorite hack for all the pieces that are on a hanger. First, leave everything hanging on the hanger. Then take the trash bag, put the bag upside down over the hangers (as if you’re putting it on the hangers). Now poke a small hole for the hook of the hanger to come out, then simply pull the bag down to cover garments and then tie the bag at the bottom with everything in place. When it’s time to unpack, hang the bag in your new closet, untie the bag and remove it from the hangers.
Tip 4 Shoes – Shoe containers are a good option if you don’t have a lot of shoes. If you have more than 100 pairs like me, shoe containers can be pricey. I prefer getting behind the door shoe organizers for this hack. With this method you can fit up to 20 pairs. Then roll it up and place the organizer into a box. To ensure all your shoes fit you may need to buy more than one organizer. This helps keep your pairs together and safe in one place.
Tip 5 Accessories – Resealable bags are what come to mind and realistically can be the most practicle. I put bracelets, earrings, and rings into baggies. In order to conserve the baggies I group similar pieces. Just remember to place each necklace in its own resealable bag to prevent damage and any tangles. Now place all baggies into a larger resealable bag or into a moving box to keep the accessories all together.
